Challenge
Logistics, high infrastructure costs, and physical limitations severely bottleneck military medical readiness across European Union Member States. Traditional training relies heavily on centralized facilities that are expensive and difficult to access. At the same time, physical simulations hit hard caps in their ability to safely replicate high-stress combat environments where training quality directly impacts life-or-death outcomes.
Besides, disparities in regional training infrastructure mean that medical preparation standards remain uneven across the EU. To strengthen European defence readiness and ensure operational superiority, EU forces must eliminate geographic barriers and harmonize medical training standards.
Next-gen military medical training
READYMED is an EU-backed initiative designed to modernize military medical training across Europe. The platform integrates eXtended Reality (XR), artificial intelligence (AI), and high-speed 5G connectivity into an advanced trauma simulator – enabling military and medical personnel to undergo immersive, high-fidelity training scenarios in virtual reality.
As the direct successor to the VireTS program, which focused on prolonged field care, READYMED significantly expands the scope of immersive military medicine. All training protocols are built on the Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) standard.
The platform targets the high-pressure scenarios that matter most in the field. Personnel can train for chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive (CBRNE) threats, as well as complex traumatic injuries such as amputations. Additionally, READYMED prepares teams for mass casualty triage, prolonged field care when evacuation is delayed, and seamless medical evacuation coordination under dynamic operational conditions.
Project consortium and the role of LMT
Running for 36 months and concluding in 2028 with €11 million in total funding, the project brings together key expertise from eight European countries.
The READYMED consortium features leading industry, technology, and defence partners across Europe: Sia Exonicus R&D (Coordinator, Latvia), Aditerna GmbH (Germany), AIT Austrian Institute of Technology GmbH (Austria), Bloodout OÜ (Estonia), C&V Consulting (Belgium), CS Group-France (France), Ecole Royale Militaire - Koninklijke Militaire School (Belgium), Fondazione SAFE (Italy), Mindconsole GmbH (Austria), Nokia Solutions and Networks Kft (Hungary), and LMT (Latvia).
In collaboration with project consortium members, LMT leads the network and infrastructure deployment for the READYMED platform, delivering the secure cloud environment and robust 5G connectivity needed for immersive, real-time medical simulation. Because the platform processes sensitive defence data and coordinates XR headsets across international borders, end-to-end security and low latency are embedded into every layer.
Working in tandem with Nokia, LMT ensures the architecture scales reliably from domestic trials in Latvia to full multinational EU operations. This effort deepens LMT’s long-standing collaboration with Exonicus, Latvia’s premier XR military simulation developer. This partnership previously made history by deploying the first 5G-connected defence simulation at the Ādaži military base.
