The challenge
Today’s low-power IoT (Internet of Things) systems rely on constant connectivity and fixed sampling schedules, and early satellite-based (NTN) IoT uses power-hungry radios with no support for harvested energy. This wastes power, drains batteries, and performs unreliably when power or coverage is intermittent, limiting scale and driving up costs and e-waste.
About the project
IoT-ZERO develops the sensing and connectivity architecture and foundation needed to power the next generation of IoT devices on near-zero energy, including battery-less nodes that run on energy harvested from their surroundings. By combining event-driven neuromorphic sensing, asynchronous secure communications, and seamless terrestrial-satellite (TN–NTN) connectivity, the project paves the way for IoT deployments that are self-powered, maintenance-free, and built to operate reliably for decades.
The project brings together 10 partners from 8 European countries, led by Technische Universität Wien (TU Wien), to jointly develop sustainable and energy-efficient IoT technologies for the future. IoT-ZERO is funded by the EU’s Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) under the Horizon Europe programme, and runs from June 2026 to May 2029, with a total project budget of €3.18 million.
LMT in IoT-ZERO
LMT’s work in IoT-ZERO focuses on improving the energy efficiency, autonomy, and intelligence of IoT devices by combining the technological capabilities of mobile and satellite networks. LMT leads the work package on Architecture, Lifecycle Modelling and Energy Management for Near-Zero Energy IoT, shaping how these devices are designed, deployed, and managed throughout their operational life.
Participation in the research-driven IoT-ZERO project delivers strategic long-term value for LMT by elevating the company’s core engineering capabilities and positioning LMT at the forefront of future connectivity. Through this initiative, LMT’s technical team is building high-potential expertise to pioneer a new generation of market-leading, ultra-energy-efficient sensors and other advanced IoT technologies. Beyond technology development, the project enables LMT to actively participate in defining new system architectures, contributing to international 6G standardization, and building strong, collaborative ties with leading European industry partners.
LMT’s participation is backed by a budget of €0.24 million, of which €0.22 million is EU-funded. IoT Zero has received funding from the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking under the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme, under Grant Agreement No. 101292662.
