Challenge

One of the main challenges facing modern land defence is that traditional armored fighting vehicles function as rigid, closed systems, making them prohibitively expensive and time-consuming to upgrade as battlefield demands evolve.

Integrating crucial modern capabilities like real-time sensor fusion, high-speed edge computing, and AI-driven command networks typically requires total fleet overhauls rather than simple technology swaps. What’s more – a fragmented defence landscape built on proprietary designs creates severe interoperability barriers across allied forces. As a result, militaries are reliant on static platforms that struggle to adapt to fast-paced technological shifts and long-term security threats.

About the project

AURIGA (ArmoURed Infantry Ground Assault) is a European Defence Fund-supported design and research initiative aimed at laying the groundwork for next-generation land combat platforms. Run by a cross-European consortium led by Leonardo, the project brings together 48 defence companies, research institutions, and technology providers across 18 European nations to unify military capability needs and define standardized operational concepts (CONOPS).

AURIGA focuses on establishing an open, scalable, and modular system architecture built on standardized technology bricks. This plug-and-play engineering approach will allow military forces to integrate cutting-edge upgrades into both legacy platforms and future vehicles without requiring costly total fleet replacements or heavy maintenance.

The initiative concentrates on state-of-the-art technological advancement across key combat areas – protection, mobility, firepower, situational awareness, cybersecurity, and Command, Control, Communications, Computers, and Intelligence (C4I). By leveraging "derisking" demonstrators and incorporating advanced capabilities like AI-assisted command systems, real-time sensor fusion, and high-speed communications, AURIGA will ensure multi-domain operational interoperability and long-term adaptability for allied European defence forces.

LMT’s role in AURIGA

As a consortium partner and Latvia's national coordinator, LMT is working closely with the Latvian Ministry of Defence to develop the AIFV Concept of Operations (CONOPS) and define End User Needs, translating front-line military demands into actionable system requirements and contributing to the successful implementation of related project tasks and technical activities.

Drawing on our expertise in advanced 5G/6G connectivity, private networks, external communications, C4I and interoperability, UxV, IoT, and edge computing, LMT contributes directly to requirement reviews and technical studies for essential components that shape AURIGA’s overall architecture. Beyond system development, LMT’s involvement helps drive the export of Latvian innovations while building strategic partnerships with global defence leaders in land combat and UAV technologies.

The project is co-funded by the European Union under the European Defence Fund.
